"How I wish, how I wish you were here. We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year, running over the same old ground. What have we found? The same old fears. Wish you were here."
This is a verse from the song 'Wish You Were Here’ and it has been my all-time favourite ever since I first heard it!
Released in the month of September 1975, ‘Wish You Were Here’ is an album that you must definitely listen to, particularly its vinyl record version. The clarity and quality of the vinyl record will help you understand the depth behind each note and every guitar string. As most music enthusiasts would know, Pink Floyd, is an English progressive rock group from London. They were students that had and still have a profound influence on millions of people across the world. They created this masterpiece which includes five songs.
The five songs are:
· ‘Shine on You Crazy Diamond (Parts I–V)’
· ‘Welcome to the Machine’
· ‘Have a Cigar’
· ‘Wish You Were Here’
· ‘Shine on You Crazy Diamond (Parts V I–IX)’
The band was famous for using studio effects and synthesizers. The founders of the band were Roger Waters, Richard Wright, Syd Barrett, and Nick Mason. A fifth member by the name of David Gilmour joined the group much later. However, Syd Barrett had to leave the band due to medical reasons. In fact it will be interesting to note that the song ‘Shine on You Crazy Diamond’, is actually dedicated to Syd Barrett, since his mental breakdown had forced him to leave the band. The entire album ‘Wish You Were Here’ has an underlying conceptual theme that was written by Roger Waters.
I would suggest listening to the entire album from the beginning to the end in order to truly enjoy and experience it. Use a good turntable and good vinyl record so that the quality is not compromised. You could ask your friends to join in and experience sheer magic! This is an album that has never aged and it never will. Its value will only appreciate in time.
So do add this to your collection!
