From AC/DC’s heavy metal sound to Whitney Houston’s powerful vocals, the 1980’s music scene was on fire with artists releasing hit after hit. But here’s where it becomes challenging, with so many astounding musical acts, who do you crown as the best of the best?

U2: Having released 13 studio albums, U2 is one of the world’s best-selling music artists of all time. In addition to having sold more than 170 million records worldwide, they have been known throughout their careers as human rights activists, taking part in various philanthropic projects such as Amnesty International, Make Poverty History, the ONE Campaign, Live Aid, Live 8, Bono’s DATA (Debt, AIDS, Trade in Africa) campaign, and Music Rising, using music as a platform to drive awareness.
Queen: As a front runner of the British Invasion, in their early years Queen focused solely on hard rock, progressive rock, and heavy metal. Later on they started creating more radio-friendly songs, and by the early 1980s, Queen was one of the biggest stadium rock bands in the world. With “Another One Bites the Dust” as their bestselling single, and their performance at 1985’s Live Aid which is often regarded to as one of the greatest in rock history, Queen had set the standard for live performances.
The Police: Formed in the late 70’s, this English rock band achieved mainstream success by playing a style of rock that was a mix of punk, reggae, and jazz. The band has won several music awards, including six Grammy Awards, two Brit Awards and a MTV Video Music Award. In 2003, they were added into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Duran Duran: This widely popular English rock band was a leader of the “Second British Invasion” in the United States, building their pop funk style through their ultra-cool yet controversial music videos. Their notably successful career as new romantics, includes two Grammy Awards, two BRIT Awards, and an MTV Award among others. Chart topping hits include “Hungry Like The Wolf,” “Come Undone,” and “Girls On Film.”
AC/DC: Formed in Australia in 1973, this powerhouse rock band has gone on to become one of the most influential hard rock sounds of its era. Following the death of the former lead singer Bon Scott, the band released their most successful album Back in Black, selling over 10 million copies in the United States alone. Overall, AC/DC has received thirteen nominations and have won three awards.
Madonna: Throughout her career, she has written and produced most of her songs, with many of them reaching number one on the record charts, including “Into the Groove”, “Papa Don’t Preach”, “Like a Prayer”, and “Vogue”. Recognized for pushing the boundaries in the music industry with her lyrics and style, Madonna has established herself as the best-selling female recording artists of all time.
Michael Jackson: Known as the “King of Pop”, Michael started his career amongst siblings in the 60’s as part of the popular group Jackson 5 at just 11 years old. In 1982, his album Thriller broke world records and became the biggest and best selling album of all time. Chart topping hits include: “Beat It,” “Smooth Criminal,” “Billie Jean,” and “Thriller.”
Bon Jovi: As one of the biggest American rock bands of their era, the band has released 12 albums, two compilations, and two live albums. Collectively, they have sold more than 100 million records and have performed more than 2,700 times. In 2006, the band was inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006. Chart topping hits include “You Give Love a Bad Name,” “Wanted Dead or Alive,” and “Livin’ On A Prayer.”
Whitney Houston: Regarded as one of the biggest female acts of all time, it’s estimated that she sold 170-200 million records throughout her career. She is the only artist to chart seven consecutive No.1 Billboard Hot 100 Hits. In 1986, Rolling Stone magazine named her self-titled album “Whitney Houston” the best album of the year. Chart topping hits include “I Will Always Love You,” “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” and “How Will I Know.”
Prince: Having sold over 100 million records, Prince is one of the best-selling artists of all time. His impressive track record includes having won seven Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe and an Academy Award. The Rolling Stone magazine ranked him at number 27 on its list of the 100 greatest Artists of All Time.
